A vulnerability in the well-known Bitcoin wallet Electrum technology has exposed thousands of Bitcoin wallets.

Another upgrade under study is the release of a new version of the Electrum-LTC desktop wallet. Electrum-LTC is an SPV wallet that can be used in Windows, Linux, and OS X operating systems.

Google researcher Tavis Ormandy discovered the Bitcoin wallet Electrum.

Wallet history can be obtained from a central server, such as an Electrum server, but each address uses a new Tor circuit. A closely related idea is to connect the Electrum servers in the onion routing network together. When creating such a scenario, care should be taken to avoid time correlations that link addresses together, otherwise the server might use the fact that the requested addresses are time-close to each other.

If someone's Electrum wallet is connected to one of these servers and tries to send a BTC transaction, they will see an official message telling them to update their Electrum wallet, as well as a scam URL.

The Healthy Security Lab is concerned that Nearly 250 bitcoins have been stolen in a recent hacking attack on an Electrum wallet. This attack, confirmed by Electrum, involves creating a fake version of the wallet to trick users into providing password information. Electrum responded on Twitter that "this is an ongoing phishing attack on Electrum users and advised users to download wallet apps from the official website" and that The Healthy Security Lab advised users not to install an unknown source of Electrum wallets to avoid being tricked.
